Why Select An Orthodontic Specialist?
Just as there are specialists in medicine, such as cardiologist and neurologist, etc. there are specialists in dentistry for a reason. Orthodontics is a specialty area of dentistry involving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. While many orthodontic problems are inherited, some are acquired. Inherent conditions include crowding, spacing, protrusion, retrusion, oversized or undersized teeth, and genetically missing or extra teeth. Acquired conditions can result from thumb or finger sucking, mouth breathing, accidents, and certain diseases and dietary deficiencies.
In the course of a 4-year dental school training, dental students are afforded very short “rotations” through the specialty clinics (i.e., Endodontics, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Periodontics, etc.). Here the dental student receives only an exposure to the dental specialties. In order to be considered a dental specialist, after completing dental school, the general dentist must also complete a full-time, two to four year residency program from an accredited university-based institution. While the scope of dental licensing permits General Dentists to perform services which overlap into the scope of the dental specialist, the consumer should be aware of the differences in the training and experience to enable them to make an educated choice.
Dr. Anderson completed and maintains the training necessary to earn the title of Orthodontic Specialist as recognized by the American Association of Orthodontists. Since 1988 his practice has been dedicated solely to the practice of Orthodontics.
