The patient becomes a vital part of the Orthodontic team during
their treatment. Patients who are committed to complying with
instructions given them will have a better result and most often finish
treatment in less time. The patient is responsible to:
■ Keep their appointments
■ Keep their teeth clean
■ Keep away from foods that will damage their teeth or braces
■ Keep away from habits that damage their braces
■ Wear appliances and elastics as prescribed
■ Wear retainers after treatment as prescribed
It is distressing to patients, parents, and our staff when the estimated treatment time is exceeded or the optimum result cannot be reached because the patient won’t do their part. After years of experience, Dr. Anderson decided that significant effort needed to be taken to positively motivate patients to take care of their responsibilities and thereby experience the rewards of a job well done.
Dr. Anderson also wanted to help take the “heat” off the parents at home. The solution is our ORTHO JOE PATIENT REWARDS PROGRAM. Our office is unique in providing a way for kids to “earn stars” for compliance. Each patient is given Ortho Joe Cards that track their points. When they fill one card, they get to spin the Ortho Joe Wheel and select a prize to reward them for their hard work. The kids love it!! We find that kids respond better to positive reinforcement than always being in trouble for falling short. We know that the program works and our parents are so appreciative to be given this tool for motivating their child.
